MUSIC AS SERVICE

Music can be of service. Think music in a shopping centre, music in a film, music at a boxing match or a musician playing in the background. Whilst music can be listened to and enjoyed as its own thing, it certainly serves to complement and enhance other things too. I know musicians who feel discouraged playing when no one is listening in the back of some pub or restaurant, I’ve felt that too for sure but it’s important and serves to enhance the room, the meal, the meet up, the drink. You notice this right at the end of a song or a set when the music finishes the room sound returns, there is a moment of emptiness or awkwardness as the room feels different, less vibrant, less “happening”. Like we all held our breath for a moment. It’s like we notice when the stops, not when it is going.

I see nothing wrong with this.
